Donnie

“Donnie”- A short documentary about a transman’s journey of discovery amid inequality.

Donnie, a director of the Musical Mayhem Cabaret in Tucson, AZ, always thought being transgender was not something one is. At 13, he came out as a lesbian and identified as gay for 18 years. It wasn’t until he started performing in drag shows that he felt positive about being himself for the first time. His experience as a woman performing as a man helped him come to terms with his true self

Unfortunately, despite recent changes in marriage equality, there are a lot of unresolved issues for transgender people. One of them being the way the law recognizes bodies based upon genitalia. Although Donnie, who is under Medicaid insurance, feels he could finally start his life as a man, he must still live in a world that sees his body as that of a woman. Medicaid in Arizona does not provide health care coverage for gender reassignment surgeries. According to The National Center for Transgender Equality, the following states have explicitly banned transgender exclusions in most health plans, including some plans that are not covered under federal law: California, Colorado, Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Massachusetts, Nevada, New York, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington State.
